Book your parking lots by mobile app

LUDHIANA: Now, buy your parking tickets before starting from home, as civic authorities are planning to start a mobile-based application for issuing parking tickets to residents. The main aim is to curb complaints of overcharging by private contractors in parking lots. Residents will be able to book tickets in advance, and then they can show it to the contractor after reaching the parking area. The payment will be transacted into the merchant accounts of contractors through PayTM.

The app is known as Finlo (find your parking lot), and it will come into action when MC formally launches the service. Residents will be able to purchase parking tickets in advance, and then they will not require any manual slip. They will have to just show their booking confirmation to the contractor, and they will be allowed to park. The application will also suggest the available vacant parking locations before booking.

MC commissioner KP Brar, while confirming the move, said: “We are planning to start an app-based payment for residents to end overcharging at parking lots. Already, two notices were served to contractors, and if they do not mend their ways, we will be forced to end the contract by serving a third notice.” She said they were working on mobile app options, and will launch after exploring all possibilities.

Meanwhile, Auribises Technologies director Ishant Kumar said: “We will have to bring contractors on board with us, and once MC conducts meetings with contractors over the issue, we will go ahead with plans.” He said it will not take more than two weeks to set things in the right direction, and it will bring transparency in the system, where people will also get rid of problems at parking sites. Ishant said a mobile application is already there, and they have to just set the system accordingly.
Notably, MC had attempted to launch a mobile application for suggesting parking spaces to the public in 2016 as well, but at that time, contractors had refused to support it, as they were afraid of their loss, and due to certain technical issues too, it could not take place properly. However this time, officials want to implement it for the benefit of the public.

Residents had welcomed the move, saying it would help reduce complaints. Civil Lines resident Ranjit Singh said officials were unable to check irregularities in parking lots. He said people could be seen generally arguing with contractors over parking rates, as no display boards were there for public information. He said it would be a great relief for residents, if any such planning came into effect.
MC had recently organized an auction of 11 parking sites in the city, but complaints started pouring in immediately after contractors started their operation. Despite two warning notices, the contractors did not mend their ways. People kept complaining about overcharging in parking lots. The officials claimed e-ticketing had not been introduced by all contractors in the parking lots. Moreover, other conditions too were not fulfilled like dress and nameplates for employees, and CCTV cameras at entry and exit points of parking lots.

COLOUR BARS
According to Auribises Technologies director Ishant Kumar, there would be three different colours for identification of parking tickets. When people buy a ticket in advance, the app with the contractor will show a blue colour, and when they show the ticket to the contractor in the parking lot, the colour will turn green. And, when people utilize that ticket, it will automatically turn red. This will help recognize that a certain person has used the parking ticket, and he/she will not be able to use it again.

2 LOTS INOPERATIONAL
The contractors did not make two parking lots operational, including one on Ferozepur Road (from Sidhwan Canal bridge to octroi post) and parking lot
from Jagraon Bridge to Sherpur Chowk. Now, MC is planning to cancel the contract and again auction these lots.

The parking charges can be paid online and citizens will just have to show the e-invoice at the parking lot to get the space reserved for them.

You can book online parking slots at seven parking lots in south Mumbai, including the one at Eros Cinema, Crawford Market, Flora Fountain and four others, by the end of the year.

To make finding parking spaces hassle-free and weed out corruption, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started to develop a mobile phone app, similar to the railway ticket-booking app. The civic body invited expressions of interest (EOI) recently for companies to develop the app.

The app will help you look for available parking slots at any time and allow you to book them in advance for an hour or more.

The parking charges can be paid online and citizens will just have to show the e-invoice at the parking lot to get the space reserved for them. Internationally, London, among other major cities, has a similar app.

“The project got in-principle approval from civic chief Ajoy Mehta recently,” said a civic official.

Earlier this year, Larsen and Toubro approached the civic body to develop the application and take the parking system online. However, to keep the tendering process fair and competitive, BMC will invite EOI.

Transport experts have welcomed the civic body’s approach. “The plan needs to be holistic. BMC needs to map all parking lots in south Mumbai, only after which will this mobile application be successful,” said AV Shenoy, transport expert, Mumbai Vikas Samiti.

The civic body had mooted the idea of a web-based parking system in 2013, but the project didn’t take off.

Under the new parking policy, BMC divided the city into three zones based on density of traffic and hiked rates differentially in each zone up to 300%. Parking rates in the city are in the range of ₹20 and ₹60 for an hour.
